Kirk gets called in. Mostly because Khan has made two duty officers guarding his cell ask to be relieved, one of them in tears.

He creates a lot of wear and tear, in general.

"Of all of it. Of you shining boots to start making amends."

He allows him to take it.

"You're obviously having some issue with it, and now's the time to come clean."

"I don't like the idea of their taking part in my humiliation. I see why it is necessary."

But he's keeping his eyes on the floor.

"But their thinking of me and their boots every morning- I'd rather you not say that to me again."

"It's not meant to be humiliation. Every single person here has been where you are, cleaning boots. Look, I meant it to be solidarity, to show them that you're going through the same thing they have--"

He stops himself, exhales.

"Maybe you're right. Let's come up with something else."

[full_of_wrath]

"No. They know, now, if I back away from it it will prove everything they worry about, with regards to my power over you. It'll mean it for them, and in the end, it'll mean it for you. It's important that it continue."

He tells him, because he's a formidable tactician in his own right. Which is part of the problem. He isn't a child, a cadet, who needs to learn better. He's a genius strategist with a seasoned lifetime of command.

He picks up the next boot, and starts once more.

"Tell me about Earth?"

"They know this is a temporary step, Khan. This is a month, tops. After that I'm coming up with another form of service."

Kirk decided that, because it's important to him that the menial tasks don't become so easy that Khan forgets why he's doing them.

"Earth? Earth's probably cleaner than you remember it being. In the 1990's you were still using some fossil fuels, right?"

It's reassuring, and then it utterly isn't, it's just another grind down, and he wishes absently Kirk would make up his bloody mind, either way.

"Air pollution was one of the problems we were resolving."

"What was your plan to deal with it?"

That is something Kirk has been curious about: which ideas, specifically, belonged to Khan and his people. It's not like the history books credit them with anything but the war.

"We had combined a state-sponsored overhaul of the means of production with a comprehensive ban on the creation of new products that relied on fossil fuels. In short, we took care of the factories, they took care of their products, and as the old became worn down it was naturally replaced with the old, ethically and environmentally safely produced new. We also banned planned obsolescence, imposing heavy duties on companies whose products were unable to last less than ten years."

Hearing terms like 'fossil fuels' and 'planned obsolescence' is so surreal that Kirk finds himself shaking his head in dismay.

"Considering the mindset those people must have had to run things that way in the first place, how'd they take to that?"

"They started funding the resistance movement."

He answers, simply.

"And the world tore itself apart."

He can't help an expression of disgust. It's not appropriate to show that to Khan, he knows, but things were so backward then.

"Why didn't you win? From your point of view."

[full_of_wrath]

"Because there were so few of us, that the cost of winning would have been greater than the good it would do. We would have had to kill everyone, to enslave everyone. We gathered those of us left alive, and we sent ourselves into the night sky."

Picking absently at grease under his nails, before convincing himself there's no sense trying until the nine hours are up.

"I wish they'd adopted your ideas."

He can admit that much.

"Our universe would be very different if we hadn't been set back so many centuries by greed."

"This is my third time being a prisoner of war. It, and the last, had nothing on the first."

He admits, very seriously.

[kobayashiwhatnow]

"That's the point."

Kirk reminds him.

"We're not about putting you through hell."

[full_of_wrath]

"Just altering my mind."

He agrees, with a shaken sort of smile. He's felt himself change so much already.

[kobayashiwhatnow]

"Yeah, well, even in the 24th century I don't think they'll embrace wanton violence. They'll have some other way to deal with it, maybe, but this is what we have now."

[full_of_wrath]

"This, I told you, has a lot of context in my time. I don't think it's translated."

He tries to tell him again, though it's awkward.

"I can tell it's not."

Kirk says honestly.

"I'm trying to tailor things so you'll get some meaning out of them, but I'm not going to resort to all the methods you grew up with. No executions, no life in prison, no torture or cruel punishments."

"I trust you."

He says, weakly. His mind just keeps insisting it can't be true.

That answer surprises him into a moment of quiet.

"Do you?"

[full_of_wrath]

"I do."

He says again, breathing.

"But I don't want to be your slave."

[kobayashiwhatnow]

Kirk starts to bark out that he's not, and that's not what this is.

"I don't know what you think this is supposed to be like, so why don't you tell me?"

"This, in my world? This is specifically coded that way. Usually with overtones of intense sexuality."

He finally snaps, as blunt as can be.

"I don't know what it's supposed to be like, but I can be forgiven for finding it a little hair raising that it's something the whole staff is participating in?"

He laughs, at first, because he thinks Khan is joking. And then he shakes his head.

"Are you kidding? It's a military thing. It's been a military thing since at least the sixteenth century. For the whole staff."
